Each Dreamwork Salon is offered as an introduction to group dreamwork. It’s for anyone who’s interested in their dreams, and open to new ways of working with them in a group context —no particular experience required. We’ll be a small group, of around 6, so that we can proceed experientially. I’ll present a bit about my approach, and go over a number of ways that groups can work with dreams. I’ll draw these from a number of sources, including Montague Ullman’s “dream appreciation”, Jungian perspectives on dreams and dreamwork, and techniques from expressive arts therapy. We’ll learn by doing, and spend the bulk of our time trying out our new tools on the dreams that group members bring.
Each workshop is 2.5 hrs. The online workshop costs $60/participant, or $50/each for two participants (bring a friend!). The in-person workshop costs $85, or $75/each for two. The next dates are below; please click to register.
Anyone who signs up, or is considering it, is invited to a brief phone call with me so we can get to know each other a bit, and go over any questions or concerns.
FAQs:
Will I have to share a dream?
Everyone is highly encouraged to! We’ll take turns responding, collaboratively, to each other’s shares. That said, a main tenet of my facilitation is that we practise with a model of ongoing consent; no one will have to participate more than they want to, and anyone can change their mind mid-process.
Which dream? What will we do with it?
Because our time will be limited, and our trust very new, please bring just a snippet or a scene from a dream, or else a very short one. We’ll work with each share for a fraction of the time a dreamgroup usually spends on a dream (this can easily be over an hour on just one!). The idea is not to get to the bottom of every dream —an impossible task, anyway— but to get a taste of different techniques, and a glimpse into a variety of dreamscapes.
Should I prepare somehow?
I’d suggest reflecting a bit beforehand on some dreams you might like help teasing out. See if you can trust your intuition on this —go with what brings up some feeling for you, rather than what seems like it would be interesting, and look for a dream that you don’t mind sharing with strangers. Ideally, you may have a number of options to choose from spontaneously on the day of. If you have a dream journal, bring it along; if you don’t, you’ll get the most out of this workshop if you begin a practice of recording your dreams in the lead-up.
About me:
I’m a white Anglo settler in Montreal with a longtime interest in my own and others’ dreams. This interest has taken various forms across my life: it’s shaped my writing practice, coloured my relationships, and often been a highlight in my clinical work as a psychotherapist.
Importantly, this workshop is not group therapy, though my facilitation will doubtless be informed by my clinical training, as well as by my academic background in philosophy and art, and by myriad other life experiences and social positions.
